Top Healthy Eating Tips
To eat well you should be havng a balanced diet, but what exactly does that mean?
A balanced diet contains a variety of different types of foods, including plenty of vegetables and friut, lots of foods containing starch, like wholemeal breads and cereals. Also, you need protein, which comes from meat and fish. You will also need some diary products such as milk and yogurt. We all need some sugar based foods too when doing activity as these foods contain plenty of energy which is broken down and available quickly.
We have put together some tips to help you in your weight loss program.
Drink Lots of Water
We all should drink between 6 and 8 glasses of water a day, roughly works out to be just
over a litre. It doesn’t have to be mineral rich bottled water, but standard tap water will do fine. this will keep you hydrated. In warmer days, and during the summer, especially if you are doing lots of exercise you will need to drink more than the normal amount. also id possible stay away form sweet fizzy drinks, as these do have calories, which you should try to avoid.
Eat More Fish
We should all try to eat at least 2 potions of fish each week. Of these two potions one should be oily fish, which are high in omega 3 fatty acids and other vital minerals that are very beneficial to our bodies that help to keep our heart healthy. Examples of oily fish are trout, salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and fresh tuna.
Starchy Foods
some people think that when eating a balanced diet, or when you are trying to loose weight
you should avoid starchy foods at all costs. This is in fact, not the case, our bodies need energy to function, and we get this best from foods that contain starch. We should try to ensure that at least 33% of each meal is made up of starchy foods. And where possible use wholegrain foods. Starchy foods also contain fibre, calcium and iron which are all vital to our well being. We should eat wholegrain foods because they are digested much more slowly so they can help make us feel full for longer, This keeps our metabolism working longer as well, which in turn needs energy to work, which will also burn up calories, form our fat reserves.
Skipping or Missing Meals
some people belive that if you miss a meal this will help you lose weight. But in fact, studies have shown that this is the opposite. Our bodies will alsways try to concerve energy where possible, so if we miss a meal, our metabolism will slow down, and cause us to store more energy as fat, instead of burning the calories and using it for our day to day activity. We should always start the day with a healthy breakfast, using wholegrain foods high in fibre, to help prolong the activity of our metabolism, and set us up for the day. this will keep you fuller for longer, and prevent you from needing those unhealthy elevens, that are so tempting in our busy mornings at work.
